SAT Math Section Format

The SAT Math section has 44 questions across two adaptive modules of 22 questions each. You have 70 minutes total — 35 minutes per module. Most questions are multiple-choice with four options. Roughly 25% are student-produced response (SPR) questions: you enter the answer directly rather than selecting from choices.

A calculator is permitted for the entire Math section. College Board provides a built-in Desmos graphing calculator inside Bluebook. You may also bring an approved personal calculator. Not every question benefits from a calculator — some are faster to solve algebraically.

A reference sheet with geometry formulas (area, circumference, volume, special right triangles) is available at the start of each module. Use it. Students regularly waste time trying to recall formulas that are provided.

Algebra Strategies

Linear equations are the foundation of SAT Algebra. The most common question type gives you a word problem and asks you to write and solve an equation. Practice translating relationships like "rate × time = distance" and "total = unit price × quantity" into algebraic form quickly.

For systems of equations, substitution is usually fastest when one equation already isolates a variable. Elimination works better when both equations have matching or easily-matched coefficients. Don't memorize which to use — scan the pair and pick whichever approach is quicker for that specific problem.

For linear function interpretation questions ("What does the slope represent?"), the answer is almost always about the rate of change: what increases or decreases per unit of the independent variable. Read the units carefully.

When solving inequalities, the only rule that trips students up: flip the inequality sign when multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative number.

Advanced Math Strategies

Quadratics appear constantly in Advanced Math. Know all three forms: standard (ax² + bx + c), vertex form a(x − h)² + k, and factored form a(x − r)(x − s). The SAT will often give you one form and ask something best answered using a different form — converting between them quickly is a core skill.

For exponential function questions, the key insight is that exponential growth or decay always follows y = a · b^x. The initial value is a; the base b is the growth factor per unit interval. If b = 1.06, the quantity grows by 6% per period. If b = 0.85, it decreases by 15% per period.

For polynomial questions involving roots and factors, the factor theorem is your best friend: if (x − r) is a factor, then r is a root, and f(r) = 0. The SAT tests this relationship from multiple angles.

💡 STRATEGY TIP

On "which expression is equivalent to..." questions, substitute a simple value (like x = 2) into the original and each answer choice. The matching choice is correct. This bypasses the algebra entirely.

Problem-Solving & Data Analysis Strategies

These questions live and die on careful reading. The most common error is misidentifying what the question is actually asking — the value, the percent change, the probability, or the predicted value. Re-read the final question sentence before you start calculating.

For data interpretation questions, always check the units on each axis, the title of the graph, and any footnotes or asterisks before answering. The SAT frequently hides the key detail in a part of the chart most students skip past.

For probability questions: probability = favorable outcomes ÷ total outcomes. If a conditional probability is involved ("given that X, what is the probability of Y?"), the denominator shrinks to the subset defined by the condition.

💡 STRATEGY TIP

For two-way table questions, always determine whether you need a row percentage, a column percentage, or a whole-table percentage before calculating. Most errors come from dividing by the wrong total.

Geometry & Trigonometry Strategies

The reference sheet covers the formulas you're most likely to need: circle circumference and area, triangle area, box and cylinder volume, cone and sphere volume, and the two special right triangle ratios (30-60-90 and 45-45-90). Open it at the start of every module and remind yourself it's there.

For trigonometry, the SAT primarily tests sin, cos, and tan in right triangles. The mnemonic SOH-CAH-TOA covers the vast majority of what's tested: sin = opposite/hypotenuse, cos = adjacent/hypotenuse, tan = opposite/adjacent. The one advanced concept that appears occasionally: complementary angle relationships — sin(x°) = cos(90° − x°).

For circle questions involving arc length and sector area, remember both are proportional to the central angle. Arc length = (θ/360°) × 2πr. Sector area = (θ/360°) × πr². If the problem gives you radians, the formulas become (θ/2π) × circumference and (θ/2π) × area.

Calculator Tips

Use the Desmos graphing calculator for any question involving intersections, maximums, minimums, or roots. Typing two functions into Desmos and clicking the intersection point is faster than solving algebraically, and it eliminates calculation errors.

Don't reach for the calculator on every question. Simple arithmetic, substitution questions, and problems with variables often solve faster by hand. Using the calculator when you don't need it wastes time and can introduce entry errors.

If you plan to bring a personal calculator, practice with it before test day. Familiarity matters — fumbling with calculator functions under time pressure is a pacing killer.

Common Mistakes

  • Solving for the wrong variable. The SAT will ask for 2x or x + 3 when you naturally solve for x. Read the final question before marking your answer.
  • Skipping the reference sheet. The geometry formulas are provided. Don't waste time and risk errors trying to recall them from memory.
  • Misidentifying units in word problems. If the problem describes speed in miles per hour and asks for distance in miles over 30 minutes, you need to convert time before multiplying.
  • Ignoring student-produced response format. SPR questions have no answer choices to fall back on. A careless calculation means a wrong answer with no partial credit — double-check your work.
  • Over-relying on the calculator. Using it for every step slows you down and creates more opportunities for keystroke errors. Save it for questions that genuinely need it.
