What to Expect on Test Day

Algebra questions make up the largest single category on ACT Math, with roughly 12–14 of 45 questions. The Enhanced ACT Math section has four answer choices (A–D) and allows a calculator throughout — a significant difference from the SAT's calculator-restricted module. Algebra question types include: solving linear equations and inequalities, setting up equations from word problems, systems of two equations, absolute value equations and inequalities, and recognizing how operations transform an equation.

ACT Algebra leans heavily on word problems. Rather than presenting a clean equation to solve, the ACT describes a real-world scenario and expects you to build the equation first, then solve. Students who practice equation setup — not just equation solving — gain the most.

Key Strategies

For word problems, define your variable explicitly before writing the equation: "Let x = the number of tickets sold at full price." This step takes five seconds and eliminates the most common setup errors.

For absolute value equations |expression| = k, set up two equations: expression = k and expression = −k. Both yield valid solutions unless one produces an extraneous answer (check by substituting back).

For systems of equations, elimination is usually faster than substitution on the ACT because the answer choices are numerical — stack the equations and add or subtract to cancel a variable directly. Check both solutions by plugging back into the original equations.

Common Mistakes

Forgetting the second case in absolute value equations. |2x − 3| = 7 yields x = 5 and x = −2, not just x = 5. Both answers are valid, and the ACT often uses the negative case as the actual answer to this type of question.

Misreading inequality direction when multiplying or dividing by a negative. Multiplying both sides of an inequality by −1 flips the inequality sign: −x > 3 becomes x < −3.

Setting up systems with variables in the wrong positions. In a mixing problem, make sure "price × quantity" for each item is mapped correctly to the total. Write the equation in words first, then translate to symbols.

Practice Tips

On the ACT, you can use a calculator for all math — use it for arithmetic and focus your mental energy on setup and strategy. Students who practice algebra without a calculator and then use one on test day often gain 2–3 extra correct answers per session.
