Start Practicing FreeThe ACT Reading section has 36 questions in 40 minutes across four passages (or one paired set). Passage types: literary narrative, social science, humanities, and natural science. Each passage is 700–900 words. With 10 minutes per passage, pacing is the central challenge — not reading difficulty.
Questions are mostly specific-detail (go back to the text) and main-idea. About 60% have line references — use them. Many students score higher by reading the first/last sentence of each paragraph first (a passage "map"), then looking up answers by line reference.
Key insight: ACT Science is not a science test.
It tests graph reading, data interpretation, and experimental reasoning — skills that overlap heavily with ACT Reading. Students who improve their Reading score typically also improve their Science score. No biology, chemistry, or physics knowledge is required; every correct answer can be found in the passage.
