How SAT Question Difficulty Works

The Digital SAT is a multistage adaptive test. Within each module, questions are not arranged strictly by difficulty — they're somewhat randomized. However, Module 2 is calibrated based on your Module 1 performance.

Perform well on Module 1 and you receive a harder Module 2 with a higher maximum score; perform poorly and you receive an easier Module 2 with a lower maximum score. Your Module 1 performance has an outsized impact on your final score range.

Treat Module 1 as your most important module. Accuracy in Module 1 determines your ceiling — spending too little time on Module 1 questions to "save time" for Module 2 is counterproductive.

Since questions within a module are not strictly in difficulty order, don't assume a late-appearing question is harder. Approach each question fresh.

If Module 2 feels unusually hard, interpret this positively — it means Module 1 went well and you're on the high-scoring track. Staying calm when the test feels hard is itself a performance skill.

Use the question flag feature to mark questions for later review rather than abandoning them.

Rushing through Module 1 to save mental energy for Module 2. Module 1 performance has a larger impact on your score range than Module 2 performance within that range.

Giving up on a hard-feeling Module 2 because the difficulty signals failure. A harder Module 2 is a sign of success — stay focused.

Treating all questions as equally important. Unanswered questions are guaranteed zeros; any answer has at least a 25% chance of being correct.
