ACT Science Strategies: Data, Experiments & Models

What to Expect (It's Not Really Science)

The ACT Science section (40 questions in 40 minutes) is widely misunderstood. It does not test biology, chemistry, or physics knowledge. It tests your ability to read graphs, interpret tables, understand experimental design, and evaluate competing scientific explanations — skills that are closer to ACT Reading than to a science class. Students who realize this stop trying to remember content and start practicing data literacy, which is what the section actually rewards.

The section has three question-set types: Data Representation (charts and graphs), Research Summaries (experiments and their results), and Conflicting Viewpoints (two scientists presenting opposing explanations). Conflicting Viewpoints is the exception — it is more reading-focused and does require understanding the logic of arguments.

Key Strategies by Question Type

Data Representation (roughly 15 questions): Look at the axes, units, and labels before reading anything else. Questions will ask you to read off a value, identify a trend, or extrapolate — all of which require understanding what's on each axis. Never answer from general knowledge; answer from the graph.

Research Summaries (roughly 18 questions): Identify what variable was changed (independent) and what was measured (dependent) for each experiment. Questions often ask how changing one variable would affect results — trace the relationship shown in the data rather than reasoning from science content.

Conflicting Viewpoints (roughly 7 questions): Read both positions before answering any questions. Note what each scientist claims and what evidence they cite. Questions will ask you to identify what evidence supports or undermines each position — this is an evidence-evaluation task, not a memorization task.

Common Mistakes

Using outside science knowledge. The ACT Science section is self-contained. Every correct answer can be supported by information in the passage. Students who "know" that higher temperature increases reaction rate but can't find that relationship in the given data are using outside knowledge — and may be wrong about the specific experiment presented.

Misreading axes. If a graph shows time on the x-axis in seconds and a student reads it as minutes, every data-based answer will be wrong. Slow down for 10 seconds at the start of each passage to read axis labels carefully.

Rushing the Conflicting Viewpoints passage. This set takes more time because it requires holding two arguments in mind. Budget 11–12 minutes for it, even if that means moving faster on Data Representation sets.

Practice Tips

Practice with released ACT Science passages (free at act.org) before timed drills. On your first pass, answer every question by citing the specific graph, table, or sentence that supports your choice. This builds the "anchor to the passage" habit that Data Representation rewards.

For time management: Data Representation sets are fastest (6–7 minutes each), Research Summaries moderate (8–9 minutes), Conflicting Viewpoints slowest (11–12 minutes). If you're running out of time, prioritize Data Representation sets — they have the most questions for the time invested.
