SAT Time Management: Pacing by Section

The Digital SAT gives you 32 minutes for each Reading & Writing module (27 questions) and 35 minutes for each Math module (22 questions). That's roughly 71 seconds per R&W question and 95 seconds per Math question.

The adaptive format means Module 2 is calibrated to your Module 1 performance. Perform well on Module 1 and you receive a harder Module 2 with a higher score ceiling; perform poorly and you receive an easier Module 2 with a lower ceiling. This makes early accuracy disproportionately important.

Use the first-pass/second-pass method: answer every question you can quickly, flag the hard ones, then return with remaining time. Never spend three minutes on one question while ten others go unanswered.

In Math, set up each problem structure — label the diagram, name the variables — before calculating. This setup phase prevents wasted work from misreading the problem.

In Reading & Writing, read the question before the passage. This focuses your reading on what actually matters for the specific question.

Aim to finish each module with three to five minutes remaining for flagged questions.

Spending too long on a hard question because you feel close to the answer. If you've spent 90 seconds without a clear path forward, make your best guess, flag it, and move on.

Leaving questions blank. There is no penalty for wrong answers on the Digital SAT — every blank answer is a guaranteed zero, while a guess has a 25% chance of being correct.

Treating Module 1 as less important than Module 2. Module 1 determines your score ceiling — rushing it to "save time" for Module 2 is counterproductive.

Practice under timed conditions from Day 1. Time pressure is a separate skill from content knowledge and requires its own dedicated practice.
