SAT Reading Comprehension: How to Approach Passages

Reading comprehension forms the backbone of the Reading & Writing section — approximately 15–20 of the 54 questions test your ability to understand, interpret, and draw inferences from texts. Passages span literature, history, social studies, and science.

Question types include: identifying the main idea, understanding what a word means in context, drawing logical inferences, and identifying the function of a specific sentence or paragraph within the larger text.

Read actively: as you finish each paragraph, note its main point in two to three words in the margin or on scratch paper. This builds a mental map that makes question-answering faster.

For main idea questions, the answer is usually signaled in the first or last paragraph. Be suspicious of choices that are true but too narrow — the SAT rewards the broadest accurate characterization.

For inference questions, the answer must follow necessarily from the text — not just be consistent with it. If the passage doesn't require the inference, it's wrong.

Choosing answers based on outside knowledge rather than passage text. On the SAT, outside knowledge can lead you to true statements that the passage doesn't actually support.

Selecting answers that are partially correct. Check that every word in the answer choice is supported by the passage — one unsupported word makes the whole answer wrong.

Confusing what the author implies vs. what the author states. Inference questions ask for what must be true; they do not ask for what might be true or what is generally true.

Practice reading under timed conditions from the start — the Digital SAT R&W section is paced at roughly 71 seconds per question including reading. Time pressure is a separate skill from content knowledge.
