SAT Text Structure & Purpose Questions

Text structure questions ask what role a specific sentence or paragraph plays in the passage as a whole. Purpose questions ask why the author included a particular detail or what the overall intent of the passage is. These appear 4–6 times per test.

Common structures tested: examples that support a claim, counterarguments the author then refutes, background that sets up the main argument, and transitions that shift focus between ideas.

For sentence function questions, ask: "What would the passage lose if this sentence weren't there?" The function is what it contributes — not what it says, but what it does.

For paragraph purpose, read the sentence immediately before and after the paragraph to understand how it bridges two parts of the argument.

Watch for structural signal words: "however" and "yet" signal counterpoints; "for instance" and "such as" signal examples; "therefore" and "thus" signal conclusions; "although" signals concession. These words explicitly state what a sentence is doing.

Confusing what a sentence says with what it does. The function of a sentence is its structural role — example, evidence, claim, counterargument, conclusion — not its informational content.

Choosing "provides evidence for" when the sentence is actually making a claim, not supporting one. Evidence follows a claim; it doesn't precede it.

Missing structural signal words because you read too quickly. Slow down on the sentence immediately before and after the target to identify the connection.

Practice labeling every paragraph of a practice passage with one structural word: claim, evidence, counterargument, background, conclusion. This deliberate labeling builds structural awareness faster than any other technique.
