SAT Evidence Questions: Which Quote Actually Supports the Claim

Master SAT evidence questions: match claim scope, eliminate related-but-weak quotes, and spot correlation vs causation traps. Method, examples, and a practice plan.

What to Expect on Test Day

Evidence-based items are a core Information & Ideas skill on Digital SAT Reading & Writing — often about 4–6 questions. Common shapes: which quotation best supports a claim; which finding would most weaken/strengthen a hypothesis; which choice is best supported by the text (or text + graphic).

“Support” on the SAT means logical relevance to the specific claim, not “same topic” or “sounds scientific.” Related background, emotional color, or a true fact about a different point usually fails.

These items reward slow claim reading and fast elimination. Students who skim the claim and hunt for familiar words from the passage lose easy points.

What “Best Supports” Actually Means

Direct support: if the quote is true in the passage world, the claim becomes more reasonable. The quote addresses the same subject, predicate, and scope as the claim.

Weak / fake support: same topic, different point; true but about a side detail; broader context only; opposite polarity; wrong scope (some vs most; one study vs all cases); correlation offered for a causal claim.

Test sentence: “Because [quote], we have better reason to believe [claim].” If that sentence feels like a stretch, the quote is wrong.

Proximity is not logic. A line two sentences away can be perfect support; a line in the same paragraph can be irrelevant.

A Five-Step Method for Quote-Support Items

Step 1: Underline the claim’s key nouns and verbs. Note scope words: all, most, some, only, causes, suggests, in this study, historically.

Step 2: Paraphrase the claim in 8–12 of your own words before reading choices.

Step 3: For each quote, ask: Does this assert something that lands on that paraphrase? Yes / partial / no.

Step 4: Eliminate “topic twins” (right subject, wrong predicate) and “scope fails” first — they are the most common traps.

Step 5: Between two survivors, pick the more specific, more direct link. Prefer concrete evidence over vague atmosphere.

Do not rank quotes by how “interesting” they sound.

Worked Example 1 — Scope Mismatch

Claim: Most participants in the trial improved after the new protocol.

Quote A: “A few volunteers described the sessions as encouraging.” → Wrong scope (few ≠ most) and subjective description ≠ measured improvement.

Quote B: “Seventy-two percent of enrolled participants showed higher post-test scores than baseline.” → Matches “most” and “improved” with a measurable outcome.

Quote C: “Researchers hope the protocol can help patients worldwide.” → Future hope, not evidence about this trial’s participants.

Quote D: “The trial excluded people under 18.” → Method detail; does not support the improvement claim.

Winning logic: match quantity words and the actual outcome claimed.

Worked Example 3 — Correlation vs Causation

Claim: Longer nightly sleep caused higher exam scores in the sample.

Quote A: “Students who slept 8+ hours scored higher on average than those who slept under 6.” → Association only. Supports a correlation claim; weak for “caused” unless the passage establishes experimental control.

If the claim said “were associated with higher scores,” Quote A could be excellent.

Quote B (stronger for cause, if present in a real item): “In a randomized schedule, the extended-sleep group outperformed the control group while other study habits were held constant.” → Causal design language.

Lesson: copy the claim’s causal verb. If the claim overreaches, the best support still cannot invent experimental design that the quote does not provide — and overstrong claims are often wrong answer magnets when evidence is only correlational.

When the question asks what would weaken a causal claim, look for alternative explanations, reverse causation, or failure to replicate — not random insults to the topic.

Key Strategies That Save Time

Claim first, quotes second. Never fall in love with a quote before locking the claim paraphrase.

Eliminate in this order: contradicts claim → wrong subject → wrong outcome → wrong scope → correlation/causation mismatch → merely rhetorical.

For dual “which choice is supported” items without a student claim, treat the correct choice as a claim that must be licensed by the passage — same rules.

On text + graphic evidence, the winner must be consistent with both sources. A quote that matches the text but fights the table is out.

If two quotes both touch the claim, prefer the one that includes the decisive comparison or quantity.

Common Mistakes (and How to Catch Them)

Choosing by keyword overlap with the claim (“temperature,” “students”) without checking the predicate.

Treating vivid anecdotes as stronger than systematic results when the claim is about a general pattern.

Ignoring polarity: a quote that says the opposite of the claim in softer language.

Assuming “support” means “mentioned near the claim sentence.”

Over-inferring: the quote almost implies the claim if you add outside knowledge. Outside knowledge is not evidence on the SAT.

Changing answers because another quote is longer or more scientific-sounding.

A Focused Practice Plan

Day 1: Practice paraphrasing claims only (no choices) from 10 old items.

Day 2–3: Quote sets where you mark each choice D/P/N (direct / partial / no) before picking.

Day 4: Scope drills (most/some/all; one study vs general).

Day 5: Correlation vs causation claim rewrites — change one verb and see which quote still works.

Day 6: Mixed evidence + one text/graphic set; log miss type.

Day 7: Timed set; review only the claim paraphrase quality on misses.
